Additive Manufacturing of SMP for deployable structures
To address applicability of SMP as elements in the deployable structure, this study presents the design-to-fabrication framework of research and classification of deployable mechanisms in consideration of morphology, and material construction. The deploying mechanisms are defined as porous folding, solid folding and frame folding based upon the surface geometry and pattern, and constructive elements of SMP in structures. In addition, homogeneity and combination of SMP in the prototypes are discussed to search for performative and dynamic effects of shape changing as well as efficient use of SMP. All the proposed types were fabricated with SMP filament having the glass transition temperature at 35°C and the thermodynamic cycles were investigated in the actual outdoor condition as well as the heat chamber. Through the fabrication and demonstration processes, drawbacks of SMP deployable structures and weakness were discovered and discussed for the future research.
