3D Suspended Cell

As the integration of robotics and 3D printing technology into architecture continues to advance, a range of experimental projects are being developed. These innovations have the potential to significantly shape the construction industry, but it is essential to also consider the environmental, social, and economic impacts throughout the entire life cycle of a building, including material sourcing, manufacturing, construction, and disassembly. "3D Grove," a 3d printing design and fabrication created through robotically FGF (Fused Granular Fabrication) using ABB IRB1200 and Dyze Pulsar extruder, was developed with these considerations in mind. The installation serves as a ceiling prototyping in a university student lounge, adding a dynamic element to the space while also conveying the message of living education. In low light environments, "3D Grove" serves as a bright, living presence.

In many cases adopting FGF for architectural construction, the design and fabrication attempts are made for wall prototypes. We tried to extend the applications of 3D Printing – finally, as a suspended panel prototype.

The main structure is designed like a tree trunk and branch. The three different ceiling types were made in different thicknesses and structural performances. Two thinner panels are attached to the thickest panels and those are hung with stainless steel wire from the steel structure. Panels are connected with the self-devised and manufactured clips, simpler clips and plastic wires. The major stainless-steel clip is made with laser-cut and bent plate, corrugated rubber plate, and FDM parts with other hardware. The groove in the rubber plate will be helping to fasten the additive layers. Also, the FDM parts controls the connection angle to create the 3D curved shape of the whole installation.

Different patterns and vertical free-curve form are introduced to three panel types. Additionally, after many experiments to bring various levels of color, gradation, and opacity, each panel type has differentiated appearance.

The entire process of design, construction, disassembly and reassembly for exhibition was conducted with undergraduate students in Department of Architecture, University of Seoul, as for the research project.
